Abstract
Scholars of the pre‐First World War French left almost exclusively judge the efficacy of its antimilitarist campaign on the basis of the left's inability to stop war in 1914. Yet by making the prevention of international war the sole criterion for success, they have overlooked significant historical events that often indicate the ability of leftist antimilitarism to challenge blatant abuses of state and military power. This article focuses on one such neglected event: the Aernoult–Rousset affair. In this affair, military and government officials covered up the fact that the young conscript Albert Aernoult had been beaten to death by his officers in a North African military prison, instead blaming the death on heat exhaustion. But when a soldier from Aernoult's unit, Emile Rousset, publicized the truth about the killing, he quickly found an ally and advocate in the French left. Following over two years of antimilitarist agitation, the left secured Rousset's release from prison and returned Aernoult's remains to his home.
